SENIOR SPORTSWEAR DESIGNER
Sun Scientific Inc.
Location: Dobbs Ferry, NY.
Status: Full-Time.
Salary: $110,000–$140,000 Base
Can be Hybrid
About the Role
We are looking for an exceptionally talented SENIOR SPORTSWEAR DESIGNER to join our R&D and Engineering team. Sun Scientific is a fast-growing, patient-centric medical device company bringing wearable therapeutic products into the future — with applications in both healthcare and consumer wellness. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you will push the form, fit, and function of our current and in-development product lines using the latest in material science, manufacturing processes, and design thinking.
You lead with function. Manufacturability is your discipline. You understand that a great product must be designable, buildable, and usable — and you sweat the details that make the difference: how a closure holds under pressure, how a bladder connects to a liner without leaking or slipping, how a patient opens a device one-handed after surgery.
What You Will Do
Design & Creative Direction
• Lead end-to-end development of soft-good components across current products and next-gen programs — from initial concept and early prototyping through production-ready design — balancing clinical performance requirements with user comfort, fit, and ease of use.
• Drive rapid design iteration from rough concept to honed product — using whatever tools move fastest, whether that’s a sketch on paper, a 3D model, a cut-and-tape prototype, and hand-sewn samples — with the discipline to know when to stop iterating and commit to a direction.
• Own CMF direction and stay current on performance materials, bonded construction, and functional hardware — sourcing intelligently for durability, washability, and production scale
• Stay current on advances in performance materials, bonded and welded textile construction, and functional hardware — sourcing intelligently for durability, washability, and production scale
Functional & Technical Design
• Design soft goods for production via sewing, RF welding, ultrasonic bonding, and heat-bonded construction — specifying construction methods that are compatible with production tooling and meet medical device durability standards, rather than defaulting to only sewn apparel techniques
• Design and specify the integration of pneumatic systems — including how air bladders attach to and interface with form-fitting liners, tube routing, port placement, and seal integrity under repeated use
• Write clear and detailed functional design briefs that engineering teams can execute
• Own the user interface details that determine whether a product actually works in the field: closure systems, quick-release and donning/doffing mechanisms, attachment hardware, fasteners, and any feature requiring patient interaction — designed for one-handed use, gloved hands, or limited dexterity where applicable
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, clinical, regulatory, and commercial teams — from design brief to sign-off — ensuring design intent is preserved and requirements translate into approvable specifications
• Oversee wear testing and provide design feedback based on functional performance results.
Collaboration & Communication
• Work as an embedded member of the R&D and Engineering team — fluent in both design intent and engineering execution, and equally comfortable in a design review and on the production floor
• Present design concepts and rationale confidently to clinical, regulatory, and commercial stakeholders — translating construction decisions into language non-designers can evaluate and approve
• Work closely with manufacturing and sourcing partners domestic and internationally, including China — conducting design reviews, sample approvals, and factory communications
What You Bring
Fashion & Design Skills (Must Have)
• Exceptional eye for silhouette, proportion, drape, and wearability
• Deep knowledge of garment construction, pattern making, and production processes
• Proven ability to solve user interface and attachment challenges — closures, sealing, hardware integration — in products with functional and durability requirements
• Hands-on experience building prototypes — iterating quickly from concept sketch through multiple rounds of physical samples to production-ready spec
Functional & Technical Knowledge (Essential)
• Direct hands-on experience with bonded and welded soft goods construction — RF welding, ultrasonic welding, heat bonding, or lamination — as distinct from sewn apparel manufacturing
• Understanding of how the body moves and how to design around it
• Familiarity with washability standards, wear durability testing, and performance certification
Tools & Software
• CLO 3D or equivalent 3D garment simulation software
• Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop — technical flats, mood boards, presentations
• Procreate — ideation and concept sketching
• Microsoft Office / Google Suite — spec sheets, BOM management, project tracking
• PLM tools a plus AI assisted design tool and software
Experience & Education
Required
• 6+ years of experience in sportswear, performance soft goods, or wearable product design with demonstrated exposure to tool or bonded/welded construction processes
• Demonstrated portfolio of functional wearable or performance soft goods products that shipped to market
• Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design, Apparel Design, Textile Engineering, or Industrial Design
• Experience working within a performance, athletic, or wearable product brand — or a medical device company with a strong product design culture
Preferred
• Background with brands known for pushing performance design and material innovation — Nike, Under Armour, Lululemon, Athleta, or similar; experience at a sports recovery or wearable device company (Hyperice, Therabody, WHOOP, or comparable); or a high-growth wearable or medtech startup with strong product design DNA
• Basic understanding of flexible PCBs, sensors, and low-profile electronic components as they relate to garment design
• Master's degree in Apparel Design, Textile Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering.
• Basic knowledge about FDA 21 CFR Part 801 labeling requirements, ISO 13485 standards, and biocompatibility testing.
